  Erlend Barlas Regional Championships

Erlend Barlas Region Championships.

Well since my wee mate has let it out the bag so to speak, I better let everyone know now.

After talking to Mike Keddie over the weekend and he has agreed to host and sponsor the Erlend Barlas Region Championships, named after our longest serving Treasurer who passed away a few years ago.

The format follows the Supers but will be a one day event, held on Sunday the 29th July 2018.

Now I know that this is a long way off but as you will see , a lot of people will be part of selecting the teams along with players may be on holiday at that time, getting polo tops, arranging friendlies, get together etc, so I want to give as much notice to all Regions as I can.

Some will come back and say why am I not involved but I have had to look at the history of pool in Scotland along with each area and try my best to give all a chance, however there may be one or two that turn down the invite to play and with that I donít mean players, I mean regions, if that happens then I will have to find replacements.

So what is the event, its a 15 person team event, with 8 Regions throughout Scotland? playing, the ? mark is there for a reason and its not for Berwick.

Round robin race to 8, once there match stops.
After all the group stages are finished, the top 6 go through to the knockout stages, with 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 top 4 , the winners of these ties play the first and second place teams in the groups, the lowest ranked team to qualify will play the team that finishes top in the semi.

Final race to 15, with the winners getting 3.5K and Runners up getting 1.5k.
Both teams get medals along with the Erland Barlas trophy for the winning team to keep for a year.

Entry fee is £500 with Styx putting 1k towards the prize fund along with paying the staff wages for the day.

Now then Regions, you are asking, well here they are;

Lanarkshire [old area]
Strathclyde [old area]
Central
Highlands
Lothian/East
Tayside/North
Fife
Ayrshire/West

I know that a number of people will start asking questions right away about where is my league in this and I will answer them in due course but each league can be involved, subject to the selection committee agreeing and that is where perhaps a problem will happen, it is for that reason I will select one person from each Region to take control and ask them to select who they wish from that Region to help them.

Iím hoping that all teams will be kitted out great, that we all have a fantastic event and everyone enjoys themselves but lets not kid ourselves, this event will be to prove who is the best Region for pool in Scotland in 2018 along with a fantastic prize fund but always remember its named after one great guy who served the SPA for over 25 years and would love this named after him.

I have asked certain people/players to be the lead person in selecting the players for this event, they to can also select others to help them but the final decision on who gets selected will be down to them.

Lanarkshire- Johny Slavin
Strathclyde - Paul Corrigan
Central - Santa
Highlands - Stevie Gray
Lothian/East - Stuart Weeks
Tayside/ north - Michael Bastow
Fife - Myself -Mike Keddie
Ayrshire/ South - Niven Adams Paul Harkness

Bringing this back up, some teams have listed their players others have not, still plenty of time left.

However i don't want to be left with any late pull outs, so i am asking for a deposit of £200 to be paid by the end of June, it non refundable unless we get another team to take their place.

Mike can you post the Fife team names on here please mate.

Teams can still add or change right up to the date of the event.

Sorry to go off topic here but think it needs said, I think a memorial tournament for people who have been loyal to the spa is a great touch. Although in some cases itís rather silly to wait until someone is dead to do this, so with that said when is the Ross McInnes Championship being sorted.

That's very true. I play in couple of memorial things every year and the guys they are for would have loved the days.

When are the teams being posted for this????

I'd have thought it'd be the same as The Supers, ie. Needing the players names, to put in to the app!!

Plenty of time for that son.

I know that Fife Highlands Lanarkshire Tayside and Central have theirs nearly ready, will check on the rest to make sure they are working on them.

Right I have seen Santa put up his Central team selected players and know of Fife Tayside Highlands Lanarkshire and Strathclyde are getting done.

As it is now under two months to go to this event I need asap listings of players along with payments coming in, if a regional pulls out for any reason, I need time to fill their place.

Can all Managers , if they can post their selected team names on here please.

Change of selection managers for Ayr and the West.

Because of family illness, Billy has asked to step away from helping to select the team and Niven Adams has replaced him along with Paul Harkness.

So all team are getting done and should be posted very soon.

I am on the 23rd of this month playing in a Masters event down near Leeds, in Andy Appletons club.

The reason I am posting this , is because he is doing a Calcutta, i though that having only a 8 person singles event would not bring a great deal in but at present at the pre bid stage he has 1500 pounds?

So I will wait until later tonight when the auction goes live and see how much does come in, then I will decide if it is worth the time to do the same for this event.

Also if you look up at the very first post you will see that I have changed to the top 6 go through, with the 3rd playing the sixth place team and the fourth playing the fifth place team.
The winners of these ties will play the first and second place teams in the groups, with the lowest qualifier from these ties playing the first place team.

The reason I have changed it, is simple, a team may have no chance in qualifying and decide whats the trouble of winning and that would not be right, not saying teams would do this but if the incentive is not there, well you know what I mean, this may still happen but far less of a chance with the top 6 going through.

Well just watched Andy's Calcutta and for 8 players the total was £3900, which is some going as he only had around 16 people bidding.

So once the full list of teams/players are submitted on here, I will run a Calcutta on this event, it will also give me practice for the Scottish.

There is no draw as all teams play each other, the top two go through to the semis and 3/6 play off to get there.
The lowest ranked team that gets through that round plays the team who finishes first in the group.

3.5k to the winning team and 1.5k to the runners up,

TD for the day will be Davy Duncan and the ref to be confirmed later.

Streaming to be confirmed but it looks like young Tosh will be doing that.

I know most of the team players who are getting selected and this is going to be one hell of an event.

The winners will be the best region in Scotland and that is one great title to win.
