2019 SPA Mick McGoldrick IM Series
by: FCBash, 1 week ago 08:15 PM (#1)

2019 SPA Mick McGoldrick IM Series
The 2019 SPA Mick McGoldrick IM Series shall have a small amended format from 2018. Areas shall still be awarded a pro-rata of qualifiers based upon their entries, The more entries an area has, the more qualifiers they shall likely receive for the National Finals.

The National Finals have 256 qualifiers, where the Top 64 from the rankings the season before are automatic and joined by 192 qualifiers from all over Scotland.

There will only be FOUR events in 2019, each of these will count towards players' ranking in the series, in addition the Scottish Singles also counts towards each players ranking. Every player is awarded Merit or Ranking Points determined by their position in each event. There will be no other IM event outside of these four.

The National Finals shall be held on the following dates:-

Event 1: 2nd & 3rd March
Event 2: 13th & 14th April
Event 3: 21st & 22nd September
Event 4: 19th & 20th October

The venues will be announced as soon as they are known. each National Finals will be held in two clubs over each weekend.

Entry for the 2019 Series is £25 per player, offering one of the best value tournaments on offer with all entry money taken in being paid out. This season just under £32k will have been paid out over the 6 IM events. In addition, players will have to pay their £5 SPA Member Registration.

In addition to the above post pease note the following:-

Qualifiers
The current ranking system is based on 256 qualifiers and the Top 64 in the rankings being auto-qualifiers. This was a condition of entry for the 2018 season and as such shall remain for 2019, however, it is noted that from 2020 IM series shall reduce to 128 qualifiers, with the Top 16 in the rankings being auto-qualifiers.

Number of Venues
Each IM shall use two venues on the Saturday and one venue on the Sunday.

National Finals
Where possible, it will be ensured that any single venue will have the same cloth on all tables for each day’s play. This will not necessarily mean both venues will have the same cloth.

No-Shows
Any player that cannot attend the National Finals must inform the SPA a minimum of twenty four hours in advance. Any player that fails to notify the SPA in this time period shall be given a warning. Any player that has received a warning, who fails to notify the SPA in subsequent events shall be removed from the remainder of the IM season in that calendar year. Should a players suspension be incurred at event four then they shall be suspended for the first two IM events from when they next register to compete.

I have been asked to put up a question from my area-
As there are less events and cost is more will prize fund increase at these events and can we see a rough breakdown of said prizes please?
£30 overall this season is equivalent of £5 per event.

£25 for 4 events next season=???

Just asking what my area is asking on our page.
Thanks.

Appreciate the update, very clear. A small suggestion to consider for the no-show rules next time they are amended: changing to a rolling 12 month period, rather than a single season minimises the scope for abuse (there's currently no repercussions for failing to report no-show at event four if it is first offence).

Since the decision to bypass the normal process for making fundamental changes was taken at a recent meeting on the basis of a time constraint (it was claimed there wasn't enough time to poll the members before the changes were made) - why aren't the changes being implemented in 2020 (halving the number of finalists, and putting 48 of the top ranked played back into local qualifying to compete for a reduced number of qualifying spots) being put the the members to vote on? There's plenty of time hmm

Peter, if the numbers remain the exact same then yes, the prize funds for each event will increase. The IM is still operating on an 'all monies in, all monies paid out' basis.

However, exact prize funds cannot be released at this stage because we don't know the number of entries.

this is for the 2019 season which collects ranking points for the 2020 season

the rules have to be in place before the SPA take entries in 9 weeks

Andy,

I note your comments regarding the no-show rules and will take cognisance of that.

Regarding changes to the IM, this now falls at the feet of the Tournament Director, Promoter and IM Secretary. I quote from the AGM minutes the paragraph below:-

Proposal: Going forward, any fundamental changes to the format ofthe IM series of events will be notified to the members with a minimum of one month prior to the entry deadline for the following season’s events. It is the responsibility of the promotor, TD and IM secretary to determine the format. P: Michael Bastow; S: John Reid. Votes for: 9, votes for the Status Quo: 4. Proposal carried.

I hope this clarifies your query.

Michael

Based on the information available to me, I believe this to have been an unconstitutional vote. But as there isn't actually a version of the constitution available to members, and the vote was supported by the chairman, it seems there's too much of a hill to climb to right this. Such a shame that the direction of travel at the moment is to restrict and reduce numbers of people participating in our flagship events.
