Well done Falkirk C , knew yous wouldn't be far away after meeting yous in playoff's.
Another year a team comes through the playoffs and not only holding their own but going all the way winning the event itself.
Another reason to scrap the rule of A teams can't get relegated into playoff's as 3rd division would be far better standard without current rule protecting teams .

Time for change.

Another weekend, another division of the Super League series of events. This time it was the turn of the players competing in the Third Division. Each of them with the vision of walking in to the sound of their choice of song to the final! It was a pretty open event and going into the last group sessions most places were still up for grabs!

A mixture of pool throughout the weekend, great, good, bad, indifferent and not so good.

I must mention the behaviour of the players, absolutely spot on! All weekend, not a problem, players just playing pool and having a great laugh together throughout. Some teams trading some friendly banter. Brilliant to see. Well done to you all that attended.

It was Team Falkirk C that went the distance, and when I say distance, they literally had the longest route possible, having had to qualify to the main event! After a bit of a slow start on the Friday, they found another level and motored through to win their group. From there, they must have thought the dream was over at the first knockout stage. Why? They trailed a good Doon valley team by five frames to nil! They were defiant though, and slowly mounted a comeback to reel off the frames to secure an 8-6 win. Next up for them was an unbeaten Berwick side. A very strong team. They got over the line in this match, 8-5.

The final was contested with Dundee B, a bunch of lads that I know personally. They played their hearts out during each of their matches and gave their Captain, Andy Wares, every ounce of flesh and blood they could. It just wasn’t to be for them this time round, but they are still promoted and should look back on a sterling effort this weekend.

The final was nip and tuck all the way, none of the teams could make an advantage count and it was 5-5 after ten frames. A couple of uncharacteristic errors, which is understandable, saw the pendulum swing from team to team. Ultimately though, it was Falkirk who got the winning blackball to secure an 8-6 win.

Congratulations to Chris Hutton and his Falkirk C team, 2019 Third Division Champions!

This weekend was different to previous event for me, there was a larger amount of youth players involved. All holding their own in a tough environment. A wee special mention for Ryan Martin of Forfar, this wee man on the Saturday night potted a great last red to secure a frame. The composure shown by the wee lad was excellent. Not just in that frame, but all weekend.

Thanks go to my team over the weekend, John Reid, Alan Reynolds, Lee Marshall, Dave McLaren and Stephen Tosh. They guys make it straight forward and as painless as possible for me. Ross chipped in a bit more this weekend, throwing in a few “Ross Moments” here, there and everywhere!

Thank you to Stuart Weeks Snr for his donation to the Mick McGoldrick Foundation.

Final thanks go to Donna and her staff at Pettycur Bay, working tirelessly to keep the players well watered all weekend.

The baton is handed back to Yvonne and her team for the final event next weekend!

A final mention also, to all of the players/teams that bought squares on the football cards sold this weekend.

A sum of £330 was realised for the International Fund. Thanks to Dave M for going round doing the duty of selling.

Another great weekend at Pettycur for the 3rd division teams. Everyone got on well with each other, and always good to meet players from previous weekends again. Well done to the team at top table, event was run fantastically well, you guys made it look effortless, when it clearly isn't!!!! Well done Falkirk C on winning it the hard way, coming through playoffs, never easy. Unlucky Dundee, class bunch of guys, and good players all round.

There will always be the ones who comment about the quality of pool on show, but I think, that's what makes this division great to play in, as all want to win, but all want to enjoy the event, and do the best that they can for there teammates. Great sportsmanship was shown all weekend, and the cheer that went up when young Ryan Martin potted that red on Saturday night will live long in my memory.

See you at the 11's in April (if selected!!)

What was even the point playing that out? Surely it wasted time in the knockouts??

Certainly is something the SPA should be thinking about, 11 of the 16 teams in the bottom division were A teams, this could go to 16 A teams in a few years, then it would be a closed shop and play off’s would be gone, do they add a 5th weekend or do they change the A team protection?

A lot is said about it being pointless having a 4th division never mind a 5th but my argument for that would be to look at football. The powers that be don't turn round and slaughter the Scottish third division or Lowland/Highland league and say 'let's just scrap them' they certainly wouldn't knock back a league either.

The supers is a great chance for guys to represent their league and have the experience of the pressure, excitement and general feel for an event like it.

It's unknown what the future holds Danny. If things change then we need to be able to determine who is relegated. For instance, if A teams were not protected etc. if the match wasn't played, then we would be in a situation where we don't know the outcome. If things don't change, then yes, it was a time consuming exercise for no gain.
