SPA EventsThroughout the weekend, it was noticeable that everyone seemed to be enjoying what, for some, might have been their first taste of this kind of team pool. Perhaps then, that might explain why all but one of the Saturday morning matches ended 6-5. The only exception being the Falkirk B1 who beat the Edinburgh Pool Association 7-4.

Interestingly, the next session's matches all finished with the same score except one again, this time East Fife beating the Ladies 7-4 was the only result to buck the 8-3 scoreline trend prevalent in this session

Monklands took a final frame decider in the next session against local rivals Kilsyth, while East Fife did the same against Falkirk B1. Falkirk B2 similarly beat Uddingston B1 by the same scoreline.
The Saturday evening session again had only one scoreline different from the rest. Eventual runners up struggled against the Ladies team, before eventually edging them out 6-5. The other matches all ended 7-4 including Midlothian beating Central Ayrshire, and Falkirk B1 beating Arbroath.

The format of this event meant that the top 3 in each group went through along with the best 4th placed team to complete the 16. The groups were very tight in the end up and it was Clackmannanshire who were the most unfortunate in this situation. They and Motherwell were the only two teams to finish in fourth place, on four points and so it went to a frame count back, with Motherwell sneaking through by three more frames.

The knock out stages were being redrawn every round, which added to the excitement of the draw. A mixture, of anticipation, nerves and downright fear I think, helped create a superb arena for the knock out stages on the Sunday morning. Arbroath, Motherwell, Glasgow B2, Dunfermline Youths 1, Dunfermline B2, Midlothian B1, East Fife B2 and Inverness were the first knock out casualties, falling to Falkirk B2, Falkirk B1, Dunfermline B1, East Fife B1, Central Ayrshire, Uddingston B1, Monklands and Glasgow B1 respectively.

Interestingly, had the tournament not been redrawn, the eventual finalists would have met at the quarter final stage. As it was, with the redraw, Glasgow met Falkirk B2, whom they disposed of 6-1 and Monklands beat East Fife B1 6-3. The other two quarter finals saw Uddingston B1 beat Central Ayrshire 6-3 and Falkirk B1 beat Dunfermline B1 by one frame less.
The semi finals served up a mouth watering clash between Uddingston and Monklands, which lived up to expectations by almost going to a final frame decider. Monklands eventually edging it in 10 frames. Glasgow meanwhile booked their place in the final slightly more comfortably, beating Falkirk B1 by 6 frames to 2.

The final began with Monklands racing to a 3-0 lead through wins for Ross Hendrie, a superb finish from Kenny Miller with Andy Black taking the third frame. Glasgow finally got a frame on the board through Alec McPherson and quickly followed it up with their second from Michael Millen to close the gap to one frame. Despite this, Monklands never really looked like losing to be honest though and soon put another frame up through Mark Murray, who beat Gary Simmons for Glasgow who had been previously on 7/7 for the tournament, before Chick McCormack took them to within one frame of the title

Glory of taking the final frame in the final went to Shuggy “the joker” Richardson, and while few would grudge the joker his moment of glory, Monklands performance in the final was a true team performance. They looked solid all weekend, and were fully deserving of their victory. Tam Riggins' Glasgow team can be proud of their tournament too and treated us to some great pool and some great banter throughout the weekend. Unfortunately for them, on this occasion Monklands were just one hurdle too far for them. They will be a great addition to the A event next month.
